Located on the northern chilean side of the Tierra del Fuego Island, Ramsar’s second southernmost site lies on the border with Argentina and faces the Magellan Strait. The bay is renowned for its high concentrations of endangered migratory shorebirds from October to March. Large cetaceans have frequently stranded in the flats. The impact of pollution from oil spills and the upcoming green hydrogen industry is big a concern for the greater Magellanic region´s ecosystems.
Centro Bahía Lomas has been conducting conservation actions and studies for decades there in order to protect the area from losing its natural and cultural heritage.
