Península Valdés in Patagonia is a site of global significance for the conservation of marine mammals. It is home to an important breeding population of the endangered southern right whale as well as important breeding populations of southern elephant seals and southern sea lions.
However, the most important particularity of this area are the famous orca (Orcinus orca) that strand on the beach in order to hunt for sea lions. They have developed a unique hunting strategy, specifically adapted to local coastal conditions.
Punta Norte Orca Research has been studying these magnificent creatures for decades now, producing the information needed in order to establish them as a unique ecotype of Orca. Their goal ultimately is to protect them and their precious habitat.
