Located in Southern Patagonia, Argentina, La Plata Lake´s surface is 14,000 hectares. It is sorrounded by a wide range of mountains of different altitudes and teeming patagonian andean forests which make it a precious habitat for a huge variety of biodiversity and particularly the endangered Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus).

The Aguapey river basin in the province of Corrientes, Argentina is one of the last strongholds for various endangered species such as the Saffron-cowled Blackbird (Xanthopsar flavus), the Jaguar (Panthera onca) and the Maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

This particular conservation project started more than a decade ago, when a group of conservationists doing research in the Buenos Aires lake plateau, found that the critically endangered hooded grebe’s numbers were shockingly low.

It isn’t uncommon to go back home without having had the slightest hint of a cat, which is generally extremely elusive and shy. Seeing and photographing an endangered and elusive species is a rare combination of effective tracking and pure luck. This day though, was more on the lucky side of things.

It was a cold and rainy day in the Iberá Wetlands. The dim clouds blackened the sky and soaked the verdant thickets in a dark, deep green. We imagined the tears of an ecosystem deprived for many years of its fundamental extinct species.

Given that it is a sensitive and urgent topic in most of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, we wanted to jump right from the start into a collaboration with a robust Puma conservation project. That’s where we got to know what Fundación Cerro Guido and Panthera are working on in the Torres del Paine region of Southern Chile.
